Cult DVDs: Prefer Watching Them on VHS?

Now I’ve heard everything. There are some people out there who prefer to watch movies on VHS to DVD. I found such a person, calling himself Luigi Bastardo, who wrote an article about this subject.

He writes that although VHS tapes are far inferior in quality to DVDs, there is something nostalgic about putting a tape into the "trusty" VCR and kicking back to enjoy it. Trusty? I think my VCR has been on the fritz for years.

But, maybe he has a point. It’s like people who miss the sound of vinyl records and prefer it to CDs. I have heard that vinyl has made a comeback.

Plus, it may be hard to find some rare cult movies anywhere but on VHS. Bastardo writes that it is sometimes unavoidable to have to hunt down movies on tape because they simply do not exist on DVD.

Here’s another example: a guy named Joe (that’s his handle, anyway) posted on the Yahoo! Group “bad_movies” that he made these finds at thrift stores: “VHS copies of Dr. Who episodes: Brain of Morbius, Robot, The Ark in Space, and The Sontaran Experiment/Genisis of the Daleks... $1.00 each.” It may indeed be hard to find those on DVD. But, I think we’d all like to see that change. Every movie should be available on DVD!

Bastardo goes on to write about Sinister Cinema, a mail order company, that has many cult titles, such as Boogey Man (1980), Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things (1973), and The Tomb Of Ligeia (1964) available on VHS. He says that they are available for free, but when I went to their website and searched for Tomb of Ligeia and Boogey Man, they were asking $8.95 for each of them. So much for truth in advertising.

Hey, when I wrote the article, they WERE free -- and that's all I can say on the subject. That, and there truly IS something about loading a cassette into the ol' VCR... :)
